The “two-class society” divides the players and causes exhausting discussions

Not everything is good in World of Warcraft: The War Within. Especially not among the players. They argue and sometimes it can be very exhausting and offensive.

The Early Access of World of Warcraft: The War Within has now been running for three days. On Tuesday, the rest of the “normal” players will finally be able to play as well. These people did not buy the Epic Edition.

When Blizzard announced early access for The War Within, there was already quite a lot of outcry. As expected, the actual early access didn’t let up and there is heated debate in the forums about whether this was a good or bad decision.

  • Supporters found that Early Access was a nice bonus to the Epic Edition, which people would have bought anyway. Since it is mainly limited to story content, the advantage is not huge.
  • Critics believe that this has divided the community. “Playing together” now depends on the wallet and collecting resources early on gives a huge, unfair advantage that will be felt for months to come.

Discussion takes place in the game, is extremely toxic

However, it must be said quite honestly that these discussions, for example in the WoW subreddit, have since been pushed far down again. Anyone who has already played “The War Within” will be pleasantly surprised. The number of posts praising individual aspects of the expansion’s history or the attention to detail is significantly higher. At the moment, the negative is being “pushed down” so that mainly positive posts are coming up.

However, that doesn’t mean that the discontent has disappeared – especially not from the game itself. In the trading channel in particular, a discussion about the “two-class society” that Blizzard created with Early Access flares up almost every minute.

    Things are rarely done objectively:

  • On one side are those who don’t have Early Access and complain loudly that “Blizzard completely ruined the game with Early Access and anyone who bought it is an idiot who is helping to ruin the game.”
  • On the other hand, there are people who write sentences like “If you went to work instead of crying in WoW all day, you could afford Early Access.”
  • Of course, neither of these is a healthy basis for discussion, and attacking the other group does not exactly encourage mutual understanding. On many realms, it is simply more pleasant to turn off the relevant chats for the time being.

The “problem” is that many people don’t take their frustration to places where it will be heard or where it makes sense. You can criticize Blizzard for the early access and you should do so if it suits your own beliefs. But attacking the players who are currently enjoying early access is unlikely to lead to a solution. It doesn’t help if big streamers get involved in this conflict loudly.

How bad is Early Access really?

How strong the impact on the game will actually be will probably only be clear in a few days. What is clear is that those who bought the Early Access have an advantage and can already build up a head start on certain things. However, this relates more to the gold in the game than to actual character power. The item level and many activities are still limited, but collecting crafting materials is already possible.

Although the bitter realization on many realms is that the typical “druid farm bots” that fly from ore to ore in groups of 10 already exist in The War Within. And unfortunately, they are the ones that ultimately dominate the market prices anyway.

Cortyn says: I can certainly understand the discussion surrounding this topic and I think that neither side is doing themselves any favors at the moment. It is not helpful to insult people who are obviously having a lot of fun. Shouting at people and telling them to stop, having fun has probably never helped. On the other hand, of course the counter-argument of calling people poor, unemployed addicts who just can’t get their fix is not helpful either. Neither of these things leads to the discussion being conducted in a truly objective manner – and that is actually what is needed.

What do you think about The War Within’s Early Access? Are you already enjoying the game and think Blizzard’s decision is a good one? Or are you on the other side and gnashing your teeth because the developers did something so unfair? Or do you see the good and the bad at the same time and can understand both sides?
After all, many in Early Access are already leveling their second or third character. Because you can be level 80 in 3 hours.
