The embroidery has been rewritten ever since it made a success at the exhibition Documenta 14 in German Kassel 2017.
Since then, it has been shown around the world and has also been the basis for the Gold Bag -winning documentary film “Historjá – stitch for Sápmi”.
“Very big”
But the tributes do not seem to end. Now the art newspaper Artnews highlights the embroidery as one of the main works of the century so far. Britta Marakatt Labba’s work is in 34th place on the list.
– It is actually very large and honorable, she tells SR Kulturnytt.
She continues:
– This work means that many who absolutely have no knowledge of Sami culture become interested and want to know more. That is what is meant for people to be curious and start digging and wanting to know more and I think I have succeeded.
Is currently exhibited in Kiruna
On the top list, Britta Marakatt is laid by several of today’s absolute greatest artists. At the top of the list is the video artist Arthur Jafa’s “Love is the Message, The Message is Death” from 2016. That work depicts racism and the battle of the blacks in today’s United States.
Right now, “Historjá” is being exhibited at Kin (Art Museum in the north) in Kiruna. This summer it will be shown at the Moderna Museum in Stockholm.
