The trial of Navalny’s three former lawyers, Vadim Kobzev, Alexei Liptser and Igor Sergunin, began on Thursday in the Vladimir region, east of Moscow.

Navalny died under unclear circumstances in an Arctic prison camp in February, where he was serving a 19-year sentence for allegedly leading an extremist organization.
Since his death, Russian authorities have tightened their grip on Navalny’s supporters. His wife Yulia Navalnaya has been added to the black list of terrorists and extremists, and among other things, journalists who reported on the trial have been arrested.

A six-year sentence threatens
The three arrested last October are accused of participating in the activities of an extremist organization, which can result in a maximum of six years in prison.
According to the indictment, the lawyers passed messages between Navalny and his outside contacts, thus helping him to continue his prohibited political activities from prison.
Navalny’s camp said at the time that the arrest of the lawyers was an attempt to further isolate Navalny in prison, where he spent most of his time in solitary confinement.
AFP reports that during the preliminary hearing of the case, lawyers Sergunin admitted his guilt, while Kobzev and Liptser denied the charges.
