The trial in Siberia for the espionage case of a US journalist | News in brief

Prosecutors in Russia say they have found enough evidence that the American journalist Evan Gershkovich is guilty of espionage in Russia.

Prosecutors in Russia say they have found enough evidence that the American journalist Evan Gershkovich is guilty of espionage in Russia, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office says.

Thus, Gershkovich is put on trial in Yekaterinburg, located in Siberia.

The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office alleges that Gershkovich collected secret information for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) about an army equipment repair facility in the Sverdlovsk region. It is the first time that Russia has opened details related to the espionage charge.

The Wall Street Journal reporter has been imprisoned in Russia on suspicion of espionage since March 2023. Both the reporter and the WSJ deny the charges, and the US administration is demanding Russia release him.

Russian authorities have not offered any evidence to support the espionage claims.
