During the Almedal Week, he killed the psychiatric coordinator Ing-Marie Wieselgren and there were plans to also take the life of Center leader Annie Lööf.
Now the trial in the Gotland district court has begun against 33-year-old Theodor Engström, who is charged with terrorist crimes after the crime.
While the queue outside the Gotland district court grows longer and longer, the police begin to arrive, buses are set up and cordons are put up. Just before nine thirty, one of the Probation Service’s vehicles rolls in and out, and Theodor Engström is taken out, dressed in green prison clothes.
During a five-day hearing, the high-profile case will be taken up in the Gotland district court, where the crucial question for the court will be whether Engström’s actions should be seen as terrorist crimes. After he has entered the courtroom, removed the handcuffs and sat down, he slowly and with a curious look begins to look out over the audience bench.
“Instill fear”
A week ago, the 33-year-old was charged with terrorist crimes through the murder of Wieselgren and preparation for terrorist crimes for the plans to kill or injure Center Party leader Annie Lööf during Almedal Week.
The prosecutor believes that the acts “could seriously damage Sweden” and that they were committed/would have been committed by Engström “with the intention of instilling serious fear in the population or part of the population in Sweden”. An important part of the prosecutor’s assessment concerns the fact that the crime was committed during politicians’ week.
– This is not, as with the Drottninggatan attack, an impact on healthcare or public transport, but an impact on the open and democratic society, Henrik Olin told TT in connection with the prosecution being brought.
Lööf must be heard
Theodor Engström has confessed to the crime. A forensic psychiatric examination has been carried out, which shows that he was affected by a serious mental disorder both at the time of the act and at the time of the examination. This may have an impact on the penalty that is imposed.
During Tuesday, the prosecutor will hold his case presentation where he will present what the investigation has come to. On Wednesday morning, Annie Lööf will be heard as the plaintiff, then the defendant will be heard.
