Fantasy epic on Netflix: That’s what Avatar – The Lord of the Elements is all about

The fantasy story of Avatar follows Water Tribe siblings Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) as they rescue a boy named Aang (Gordon Cormier) frozen in the ice. This turns out to be not only the last survivor of the air nomads, but also the Avatar who has been missing for 100 years.

The Avatar is a mythical being who can tame all four elements – earth, fire, water and air – and is said to bring balance to the world. Because in the world of Avatar, which is divided into four nations, there are people who can each control one of the four elements. Only the legendary Avatar can tame all four.

But there’s one problem: Aang has yet to learn his full powers. And so begins an exciting adventure for the young trio, who are relentlessly pursued by the brutal Fire Nation – and the outcast Fire Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) – who plunged the world into a cruel war.

After 5 years of development: Will Netflix’s Avatar be better than the first film adaptation?

Netflix

The cast of the Avatar series

The Netflix series is not the first live-action adaptation of the animated hit. Back in 2010, director M. Night Shyamalan filmed the fantasy material with The Legend of Aang for the cinema. The result fell through with fans and critics. The movie received a rating of just 4.4 points from the Moviepliot community.

When Netflix announced a live-action Avatar series in 2018, anticipation was correspondingly muted. A bright spot, however, was the involvement of original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who turned their backs on the project two years later due to creative differences. The new edition was once again ill-fated.

Albert Kim was appointed as the new showrunner. He got his fill of Netflix Budget of over 120 million dollars, i.e. around 15 million per episode. In a blog post for Netflix he already promised a worthy implementation of the fantasy template:

We will expand and expand the world, and there will be surprises for existing fans and those new to the story. But throughout this process our motto was ‘authenticity’. With the story. The characters. The cultural influences. Authenticity is what drives usboth in front of and behind the camera. When does Avatar: The Last Airbender start on Netflix?

Will the Netflix film adaptation be convincing and even be able to build on the success of the real series One Piece? We’ll find out already on February 22, 2024. On launch day, all eight episodes of the first season will be available to stream straight away.
