The top referee in handball Matija Gubica receives a red card – suspended

In January, Danish TV2 revealed that Gubica appeared in a secret match-fixing report made by the company Sportradar, which has ongoing control of the betting market.

“Matija Gubica has been found guilty of breaching fundamental obligations as described in the EHF Code of Conduct and the IHF Code of Ethics”writes the European handball association EHF and also extends to the regulations of the International Handball Federation, IHF.

“Not related to match fixing”

Gubica, who refereed his matches with Boris Milosevic, is not suspected of match-fixing according to the EHF.

“The case is not related to any allegations of possible match-fixing or any other improper influence on a match result,” writes the EHF without explaining why Gubica was suspended.

The sentence entered into force on June 1 this year and applies for a year to come, during which Gubica is not allowed to sentence anything. After that, Gubica is under supervision for a two-year probationary period but can officiate matches again during that period.

Gubica must also pay a fine of SEK 67,000.
