It was during Thursday that Svenska EPN announced that Finland may tighten its tobacco policy considerably. For example, around 5,000 Finns die every year as a result of smoking and now the goal is to become free of tobacco and nicotine products by 2030.
Snus was banned when Finland joined the EU in 1995, but has become increasingly popular in recent years. And most of the snus is brought in from Sweden, which can have major consequences for cross-border trade in the twin cities of Haparanda and Torneå.
– If the legislation passes, it is clear that snuff sales here in Haparanda will be affected.
Public health
Haparanda’s municipal councilor Nina Waara believes that the goal set by Finland is very offensive.
– It is an ambitious goal, but it is of course important for public health, she says.
In the clip, you hear Nina and Tommy talk about their views on the announcement.
