The third defendant in the bribery scandal in Sundsvall is sentenced to a suspended sentence

The entrepreneur owns several companies and has done business with the municipal company Skifu, Sundsvalls industrifastigheter AB.

At the same time, the entrepreneur has sponsored the relatives of the CEO accused of bribery and arranged a rental apartment for him.

To be considered a crime, the benefit does not have to have gone to the CEO personally, states the district court.

Four bribes to a relative

The district court considers that he gave the CEO a bribe on four occasions between 2018 and 2020.

The sponsorship has taken place on three occasions and is for a total of SEK 45,000. The fourth offense concerns the brokering of an apartment.

In the first trial, which had to be rescheduled due to suspected juror misconduct, he was sentenced to three months in prison.

Brokered apartment

In police interrogations in the fall of 2021, he was asked:

How do you see the rental contract as having value?

– If the rent had been lower, I would have understood, but not as it is now, he replied.

Today he tells SVT Västernorrland:

– I have known the CEO for more than 30 years, so why wouldn’t he ask me if we have an apartment to rent.

Pay to the state

Now he is sentenced to a suspended sentence and 50 daily fines of SEK 200 (SEK 10,000). He must also repay SEK 35,000 to the state for court costs.

He has always denied any wrongdoing and does not regret his actions. “This is how it works,” he says. He will appeal the verdict.

But there is one thing he wishes he had done differently. More about it in the video.
