FRENCH PATENT. The French test for the 2024 certificate will take place Monday July 1st. What awaits 3rd grade students this year?
For students in third grade, the middle school certificate tests will take place on July 1 and 2. Five subjects are on the program for these two days of tests, including French which will open the festivities on July 1 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. On the big day, the students will have three hours to work on a dictation, grammar and comprehension questions and an essay in order to collect as many points as possible in this key test for obtaining the certificate.
To prepare for it, Linternaute invites you to discover which subjects may potentially fall this year, as well as the progress of the test and last year’s subject as well as its answer key, both available on this page thanks to to our partner Studyrama. Please note that on the day of the French test, the subjects and answers will also be available on this page.
Each year as the patent exams approach, several specialized platforms put online a list of subjects deemed “probable” to fall on the day of the test. These lists are formed by taking into account the recurring themes in the tests, the program of the year as well as the annals of previous years. Their primary goal is to allow students to organize their revisions and approach the test more calmly. However, these lists are only guesses, so you must review everything so as not to miss your test.
This year the notions deemed “probable” for the French test are: “Search for oneself, build oneself (Tell oneself, represent oneself)” but also “Living in society, participating in society (Denouncing the failings of society) and “Scientific progress and dreams”. Conversely, the notions deemed “unlikely” are: “Looking at the world, inventing the world (Poetic visions of the world)” as well as “Acting on the world (Acting in the city: individual and power).
Students in the general series and those in the pro series work on two different subjects, both presented in full below.
Subject and correction of French for the general education certificate:
The test began with a text study on an extract from George Sand’s work, Histoire de ma vie. It is also an extract from this text which served as support for the dictation. For the writing exercise, candidates had the choice between a subject for reflection and a subject for imagination.
Subject and correction of French for the professional track:
Here it is the text by George Perec, W or The Memory of Childhood, which served as support for the dictation and the grammar and comprehension test. While for the writing exercise they also had the choice between a subject for imagination and another for reflection.
Everything you need to know about the French certificate
During the French written test for the middle school certificate, Monday July 1, students from mainland France have three hours to prove themselves. This first consists of a “grammar and language skills – comprehension and interpretation and dictation skills” part, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. After dictation, this involves explaining an extract from a literary text and performing grammar and rewriting exercises. After a short break, a second part dedicated to writing follows, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The first part, evaluated on 50 points, is based on a literary text sometimes accompanied by an image and consists of answering a series of questions on grammar, language comprehension and interpretation. Twenty minutes are dedicated to dictation, graded on 10 points, of approximately 600 signs for students in the general series and 400 signs for the professional series. The order of the questions which follow, out of 40 points, is not trivial: the first are rather short and address specific points of grammar while the following call for more developed and written answers based on quotes from the extract from the text provided to study.
After a short fifteen-minute break, the students find their copy for the last part of the test: writing on a subject of invention or reflection of their choice, and on which the last 50 points are played out.
In the brevet, the value of each test is not calculated on the basis of a coefficient, but with a point count. As a reminder, you can obtain a maximum of 800 points during the brevet. You need a minimum of 400 points out of 800 to pass. Then, when you collect more points, you can get distinctions: you need a minimum of 480 for the mention assez bien, a minimum of 560 for the mention bien, and 640 for the mention très bien. The French test can earn you up to 100 points, it is therefore very important.
The date of publication of the results of patent 2024 varies depending on the academies in question but they will be available no later than Friday July 12, 2024.
