The timetable for the first technical inspections of two-wheelers, a measure widely contested by motorcyclists, is now known.
The end of the game has been whistled. After years of delay, the technical control two-wheelers will come into force in France, a decade after the 2014 European directive. The anger of bikers had managed to push back several governments, but this time the ax has fallen for owners of vehicles in the category L, including scooters and small motorcycles of 50 cm³. In total, nearly 4 million people will be affected by this new measure. A decree published in the official journal this Tuesday, October 24 specifies the timetable for the implementation of this technical inspection which, according to the Minister for Transport, Clément Beaune, will cost “around 50 euros”.
As announced by the member of the government, the entry into force of the measure, from April 15, 2024, will be staggered over several years to ”avoid a bottleneck in the technical centers.” Vehicles the oldest will be the first to have to go to the garage. ”For vehicles put into circulation before January 1, 2017 and whose anniversary date of first entry into circulation is before April 15, this check must be carried out, at the latest, within four months from April 15 2024”, indicates the decree.
A technical inspection simpler than on cars
For two (or three) wheels registered between 2017 and the end of 2019, the visit to an approved center must be carried out in 2025, in 2026 for those put into circulation between 2020 and the end of 2021. Finally, all vehicles registered between 2022 and April 15, 2024 must, as stipulated in the Highway Code, pass the technical inspection within six months preceding their fourth birthday.
Compared to the technical inspection of cars, that of two-wheelers will be simplified. The number of checkpoints, numbering 136 since May on cars, should be divided by four. Motorcycles, scooters and other quadricycles will be particularly examined on points related to safety, air pollution and noise pollution.
