The match between Germany and Denmark in the first knockout round of the European Football Championship was interrupted during the first period. The reason was the extremely violent weather that hit Dortmund’s stadium.

The match was played in rain, which, however, accelerated as the first half progressed. After more than half an hour, thunder rumbled over the stadium so violently that it was also broadcast on television.

As the rumbling and lightning continued, especially the Danish players started to spread their hands in the direction of the referee. Soon after this, the whistle blew to end the game and the teams went to the bench.

As the rain intensified, a decision was made to suspend the match. The teams left the locker room in a 0–0 situation. A few minutes later, the rain turned from water to even hail.

Urheilu expert who has played in Denmark for years Markus Halsti explored the Danish players’ quick reaction to the threat of thunder on TV.

– Tragic things happened at least once when I was in Denmark. There have been deaths due to lightning on the field. In Denmark, this was very much on the surface. We looked at the forecasts. In Mieluumm, training was postponed if there was a thunderstorm, Halsti recalled.

Some of the audience fled into the stadium, but the majority continued to sing in the stands. Osa made the most of the twist and danced soaking wet.

The interruption lasted about 20 minutes before the teams got back on the field to warm up.

Weather conditions also caused an interruption in the men’s European Championships in at least 2012. At that time, the match between Ukraine and France was interrupted for almost an hour due to heavy thunder.

In the Women’s European Championships in 2017, the match between Germany and Denmark had to be postponed precisely because of the weather conditions. The match was suspended and finished the next day.
