Brigadier General of the Syrian Army Mohammed Hamo was acquitted of war crimes charges in Sweden on Thursday.

65-year-old Hamo, who lives in Sweden, was arrested on suspicion of war crimes in December 2021 and released two days later due to lack of evidence. He was charged with aiding and abetting crimes in violation of international law.

According to the charges, Hamo participated in the Syrian army’s “massive attacks” in the cities of Homs and Hama in 2012. At the time, Hamo was working in the 11th division of the Syrian army.

of the Swedish public broadcasting company SVT the charges were dropped, because the prosecutors did not have enough evidence that the 11th division had participated in the attacks in question, or that Hamo had participated in arming the division.

Hamo resigned from the Syrian army in July 2012, joined the opposition of the Syrian government and later moved to Sweden.

According to SVT, Hamo is so far the highest-ranking officer who has been accused of war crimes in Syria.
