On Thursday alone, seven people were allowed to visit Närhälsan on Öckerö after cutting themselves on the invasive Japanese giant oyster, reports P4 Gothenburg. It was about both more or less serious cuts that they received when they went into the water for a swim.
— The edges are like knives. There are often many in the same places. So watch where you step and try to keep track, says nurse Nina Brorsson to P4 Gothenburg.
A man who was extremely unlucky cut himself on one of the oysters during a dive in Orust, reports The evening paper. After the wound had been stitched up, it was discovered that he had also contracted canker sore fever and strep throat.
Bath sore fever is caused by the bacteria vibrio which is naturally resistant to antibiotics. It thrives in warm water and can attach to oysters and mussels.
— I was really sick. The staff was also worried about me, says the man to Aftonbladet.
He had to spend a total of four weeks in the hospital. He was first treated with antibiotics intravenously three times a day and later underwent surgery.
