The Swedish Veterinary Association demands a stop to fireworks: “A mischief”

Prescription of sedatives for dogs is ten times greater during New Year’s week compared to a normal week.
The Swedish Veterinary Association now wants it to be prohibited for private individuals to buy and use fireworks and firecrackers.
– I personally think it’s a nuisance and would like it to just stop, or perhaps be controlled between twelve and one on New Year’s Eve, says Eleonor Fredler, union president of the Swedish Veterinary Association.

New Year’s Eve is approaching with great fanfare. The majority of our dogs and cats are adversely affected by firecrackers and rockets, according to the Swedish Veterinary Association. They have therefore submitted a letter to the defense committee to prohibit private individuals from buying and using fireworks.

– There are those who don’t care, but very many animals, above all both wild and domestic animals, find it unpleasant when it pops.

Not risk-free with sedation

Another tactic that has become more common is sedating the animal. Sales of such preparations are approximately ten times greater during New Year’s week compared to a normal week, states Apoteket Hjärtat. But it is not completely risk-free and the Veterinary Association urges pet owners to train their animals to get used to the sounds.

– These medications can make the dog very, very tired and so tired that it becomes a risk for the dog. The absolute best thing is to be somewhere where it doesn’t bang.

At the dog resting farm in Vanadislunden in central Stockholm, Dobby, Luna and Kian play, unaware of what will happen this weekend. However, the dogs seem to have different opinions about fireworks.

– She is very shaky and scared, but it is only for a short while. It’s okay, it’ll pass, says Kee Sun Im, Luna’s mother.

– He is not afraid of the rockets. He thinks life is as usual, quite calm, and enjoys it, she says, says Sarah Wahllöf about her dog.
