Sweden suffered a crushing loss against England.
The blow may have been Caroline Seger’s and Hedvig Lindahl’s last in the national team.
– I have told everyone, says the latter.
It was a semi-final Sweden quickly wants to forget. The national team had to get the ball out of their own net four times, and the loss is the biggest ever in an EC semi-final on the women’s side.
“Want to make it better”
The Swedish players left the field in Sheffield with tears in their eyes, and the effort was properly criticized after the match. England were allowed to play through the Swedish defense far too easily, and several believed that Hedvig Lindahl should have acted differently on two of the late goals.
– When a team loses like we did, then there are strange situations. I want to do better, but I did my best, she tells Expressen after the match.
Lindahl has managed to turn 39 years old and the given question after the departure was whether it was the last game in the national team shirt. The goalkeeper tells us that she has no plans to quit, but that the decision is not in her hands.
Veterans’ message
– I have told everyone who has asked that I will continue to play. If Peter (Gerhardsson) thinks I have something to give in the national team, he can call and talk to me as usual. Or it’s time to give someone else the chance, who can do it better than I can, says Lindahl.
Even team captain Caroline Seger may have played her last international match. The 37-year-old started the first two group stage matches, but then went down with an injury.
The midfielder has extended his contract with Rosengård until 2024, but does not want to leave any clear message about his future in the national team.
– Everyone asks. But I’m not making any decisions today. I don’t know, she says with tears in her eyes, says Seger to SVT.
