Queen Elizabeth II was honored with a minute’s silence during Arsenal’s Europe match.
Then the commentator Robert Tennisberg got really angry – against the fans’ actions.
– Can’t you just shut up, he says in the broadcast.
Britain and the world are in mourning after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96. It was yesterday afternoon that Buckingham Palace announced that the Queen’s health had deteriorated, and a few hours later her death was announced.
Celebrated with a minute’s silence
The Queen was regent for 70 years, and today King Charles, Elizabeth’s son, declared a state of mourning from now until seven days after the Queen’s funeral. How it affects the sport is currently unclear. All rounds in the Championship over the weekend have been cancelled, and the same decision will be followed in the Premier League.
However, several English teams played European games on Thursday, in the wake of the Queen’s death, and the announcement came amid Arsenal’s Europa League match against Zurich, in Switzerland. Before the second half, the teams thus lined up for a customary minute’s silence to pay tribute to the Queen. But the minute’s silence was not very silent.
Commentator’s Anger
The home supporters instead chose to boo loudly before the minute’s silence was over – which caused Swedish commentator and profiler Robert Tennisberg, on Viasat, to react properly.
– It is deplorable that you cannot keep your mouth shut for a minute of silence, this in honor of the recently deceased British monarch, who after 70 years on the throne, has died at the age of 96, he says in the broadcast.
It was also doubtful whether Manchester United’s Europa League match against Real Sociedad would go ahead, but it did, and an emotional minute’s silence was held before that match as well. Arsenal won their match 2-1, while United lost 0-1 against the Spaniards.
