During the year, a total of 194 people have died in traffic according to the Swedish Transport Agency’s preliminary figures. It is the highest number of deaths in the period January–October since 2018.
“The development is worrying. If it continues, 2023 will be the darkest traffic year since 2018,” says Staffan Berge, statistician at the authority, in a press release.
During October, 21 people died and 1,072 people were injured in road traffic, according to the preliminary data. Of the fatal accidents, one-third were single-vehicle accidents with passenger cars, one-third were other accidents with motor vehicles, for example head-on accidents, and one-third were unprotected road users. The figures are slightly higher than how many people died on average in traffic in October during the last five years.
