A person is suspected of causing another’s death after the fatal accident but has not been arrested. The police describe the incident as a tragic accident for all parties involved.
– Now we will hold interviews with witnesses and carry out a technical examination of the vehicle, we cannot say for sure when the examination will be completed, says Rebecca Landberg, at the Stockholm Police.
Trafikverket: “Terribly tragic”
Several people SVT spoke to the day after the accident think that it is often too fast on the road and some have already previously wanted to see a speed reduction. Even in local Facebook groups, the debate rages on whether the speed limit is too high or not.
The accident happened on a national road, which means that the Swedish Transport Administration is responsible for the road. They give a recommendation on the speed and the County Administrative Board are then the ones who decide on the speed of the road.
– It is terribly tragic, we hope that the investigation will provide some kind of insight into what happened because there are both traffic lights, speed cameras and pedestrian crossings at the scene, says Bengt Olsson, press manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.
Local police chief: Working to improve road safety
Peter Berggren, local police area manager in Huddinge, writes about the accident in a post on Huddinge Police’s Facebook page:
“In the municipality of Huddinge, 4 people have lost their lives in the traffic environment in the past year. Speed is a major risk factor in traffic and I see that residents in the now affected municipal area are raising this as a concern, not least before the coming school week”.
According to him, the municipality works closely with the police to improve the traffic environment. He also urges adults to support their children after what happened and reminds them to talk about road safety.
“The terrible thing cannot be changed, my thoughts go out to the affected families, relatives and friends,” Peter Berggren concludes his post.
One of the residents SVT spoke to after the accident told how her husband was hit at another pedestrian crossing nearby:
