To say the least, there are scattered bursts among the responses of the players who specified their wishes, ranging from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City to Jimmy Thelin in Elfsborg.
“Everybody likes him”
A common denominator: Jan Andersson leaves his post – soon or this summer – with good marks from the players.
– It is sad that he quits. He is a very good coach. Everyone likes him and he has good values, says the third goalkeeper Viktor Johansson.
– He is as professional as one can be in his profession, says Linus Wahlqvist Egnell.

The right back has Jens Gustafsson as coach in Pogoń Szczecin and believes that he would be suitable as national team captain.
– Absolutely. He has been the U21 national team captain before. There are certainly many exciting names and he is one. It is quite reasonable that his name is mentioned.
What qualities do you think are most important in a national team captain?
– Getting a group together as quickly as possible. You don’t get many days. Everyone comes from different playing styles and may even be allowed to change positions.
The midfielder Kristoffer Olsson was not surprised by the news that Andersson is quitting.
– Confederation captains, coaches and of course also players come and go.
Why not Guardiola?
Olsson likes to see Pep Guardiola as Andersson’s successor.
– It’s the best coach in the world, I think. But the chances are pretty slim… No, I don’t know. It is very difficult, but you have to aim high.

The striker Viktor Gyökeres speaks well of Olof Mellberg.
– When I had him in BP, he was a very good coach. He helped me extremely much to boost my career. He developed me a lot as a player, but it is difficult for me to say what he would be like as a national team captain.
What makes him a good coach?
– He wants a lot. He is familiar with tactical details, how the opponent plays. He is good at preparing for every game. I would say those are his main qualities.

Rydström or Thelin?
The midfielder Hugo Larsson:
– I like (Henrik) Rydström in Malmö and the whole football idea. But it is quite difficult to implement such football in a national team. We probably had two, three months with him before we set our game properly. But it must be a mix. If we could get a game similar to what most of us have out in Europe, that would be optimal.
Midfield Gustaf Lagerbielke:
– It’s nothing I’ve thought about right away, but I hope there will be an equally good coach (like Janne). Jimmy (Thelin) is a very good coach and has a clear game philosophy. It feels like he would have done well if given the chance.
The striker Anthony Elanga think the question can wait and that out of respect for Janne Andersson.
– He is still our national team captain. I don’t want to say who I want next because I respect him. I’m an offensive player and we have a generation coming up now. But right now we have Janne so we have to respect that.
