With crayfish season in full swing, there are also several parts that are good to know before it’s time to enjoy the shellfish.

According to the Swedish Food Agency, you run the risk of ingesting PFAS that have been released into the environment, which then end up in food and drinking water.

PFAS, which is a collective name for industrially produced chemicals, is dangerous and can cause cancer and weaken the immune system, according to The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

The substances can also easily be stored in fish and shellfish, which risks ending up in our bodies when we then eat the caught fish.

With this as a background, the Swedish Food Agency has now issued reassuring information to the Swedes ahead of the impending cancer epidemic.

“In times of crayfish, it can be good to know that it is okay to eat crayfish without risk”, they write on their website.

In the same vein, the authority also takes the opportunity to urge you to contact your municipality to find out if you need to limit the amount of fish and shellfish you eat if you feel worried. So even if you fished it yourself.

But worrying about the cancer disc is not necessary, they say.

“The facts are that it is fine to eat crayfish without risk. That’s because we only eat crayfish a few times each year.”
