The Swedish Democrats: In this situation, the EU is needed

The Swedish Democrats are basically deeply critical of the EU. As recently as before the European Parliament elections in 2024, Charlie Weimers said the party would keep the door open to be able to leave the EU about “the transfer of power to Brussels goes too far

The party has, among other things, sharply criticized the so -called Corona Fund Where the EU took joint loans to support the member states.

SD believed that it risked creating a more federal EU where more power was moved to Brussels.

Now the party changes

The severely deteriorated security policy situation with Russia’s continued war in Ukraine and Donald Trump as new US president has made the European Commission present a proposal for a massive European renovation. There, part of the funding will be EU loans. And it is thus approved by the Swedish Democrats.

These are things that you usually are critical of, that the EU takes joint loans. What do you think about this?

– That’s right and we traditionally say no to it. But in a situation where war prevails on the continent of Europe, where we have a severely impaired security situation in our part of Europe around the Baltic Sea, we cannot be ideological, says Charlie Wiemers.

“Taken by the situation”

In SVT’s 30 minutes, Charlie Weimers gets the question of whether he has re -examined his attitude towards the EU.

– I’m taken by the situation just like everyone else. I am worried about the safety of northern Europe and in that situation I am prepared to compromise with other parties.
