On the night of Sunday, Americans who tried to log in to Tiktok were met with an error message that “the law on a Tiktok ban has come into force” and that the app is therefore not available.
But there is some confusion about how the ban works and in which ways it can be circumvented. In various posts on X and Instagram, tips are shared on how Americans can get around the ban by setting a different country in their app store, logging into the web version of Tiktok or using vpn connections.
“A sadness for many”
Swedish Hanna Göthberg, 28, moved to Atlanta a year ago and got Tiktok to promote her music and find new friends. She gets into her Swedish account by using vpn connection, but she can’t even log in to the Tiktok account which is aimed at American users.
– It is very sad and a sadness for many who have built up accounts. Considering that there are so many people here in the US who have it as their main income, I hope that there will be a solution, says Hanna.
Annie’s Tiktok account blocked – even though she is in Sweden
Swedish-American creator Annie Byström grew up in the United States and moved back and forth in recent years.
On Saturday, she flew back to Sweden, where she is now studying – but when she landed at Arlanda on Sunday morning, she was met with the same error message as American users.
– It’s so strange, I’m not even in the US anymore. I changed the region in the App store before I got on the plane and have changed to a Swedish number, so I didn’t think I would be affected by the ban, says Annie.
After Donald Trump announced later on Sunday that he intends to postpone the ban, Tiktok reopened to US users. However, what the future of the app looks like is still unclear.
