It is the MB.EA Large platform, a purely electric car platform, that Mercedes washes. The reason is said to be due to poor sales for the electric cars EQE and EQS.
It is said that the discontinuation of the platform will save Mercedes several billion euros in development costs and that the German brand will be forced to review its future luxury car strategy.
This is reported by the German Handelsblatt

Changed plans
The MB.EA platform was supposed to launch in 2028 and would have incorporated the technologies featured in concept cars such as the Vision EQXX, an electric car with over 100 miles of range.
In other words, it will be a while before electric cars with a monumentally long range come to market, at least from Mercedes’ side.
Mercedes will instead take the saved capital and continue to develop the brand’s EVA2 platform, the platform that EQE and EQS currently uses.
The closure of the MB.EA platform also means that more traditional models such as the S-class will continue to be fossil-powered.

Mercedes has the floor
Mercedes-Benz has commented on the data and says it will continue to work towards offering:
– A climate-neutral new car fleet until 2039 and continues:
-We expect the global share of electric cars and plug-in hybrids to be up to 50 percent during the second half of this decade.
The Germans believe that it is the market that dictates development and that they want to be able to manufacture:
-The perfect Mercedes car for every customer.
It is completely in line with Mercedes’ previous statements where they communicated that they will offer fossil fuel cars as long as the market desires it.
