The Swedish brand is launching Ikea Preowned its second hand platform

The Swedish brand is launching Ikea Preowned, its second-hand platform allowing individuals to buy and sell the brand’s furniture at reduced prices. A sort of Leboncoin for furniture!

Since its founding in 1943, Ikea has made a name for itself by making quality furniture accessible to all. In its nearly 80 years of existence, the Swedish brand has designed countless pieces that have become iconic. So much so that its products are extremely sought after, including on the second-hand market, which continues to grow. According to its figures, Ikea represents 10% of the second-hand furniture market – in France alone, there are nearly 150,000 listings for Ikea products on Leboncoin. So the company seems determined to take its share of the pie.

Ikea already offers a second-hand service in store which allows you to buy products with defects or returned in store at a reduced price. But this service is limited to products available in stores. The site allows you to look at what is available in a specific store and then go and get it there. Also, Ikea is launching a new platform today that offers a similar operation to that of Leboncoin or Vinted. Called Ikea Preowned, it allows individuals to resell and buy Ikea furniture between themselves. A way to simplify the purchase and sale of second-hand furniture, but also to make classic and coveted pieces more accessible. Please note that the site is not available in France at the moment, it is in the test phase until the end of the year in the stores of Madrid in Spain and Oslo in Norway.

Ikea Preowned: a second-hand platform between individuals

With Ikea Preowned, Leboncoin fans will not be disoriented. To sell, simply take a photo of the product and indicate its condition and to offer a price. A small specificity of the site all the same: thanks to a database optimized by artificial intelligence, Ikea adds the photos of the furniture from its catalog, as well as the information and measurements. The buyer, for his part, browses the ads, selects the products he likes and finalizes his purchase directly via the platform – on average, the prices displayed are 40% cheaper than the original price. The seller has the choice between receiving money or opting for a 15% IKEA discount voucher, thus encouraging loyalty to the brand. The buyer then collects the product directly from the individual.

Ikea Preowned is initially being tested in the cities of Madrid and Oslo. If the experiment proves positive, the service will be extended to other markets where Ikea is already established. This test phase will also allow the platform to be adjusted and refined based on user feedback. For the moment, the use of the platform is free, but it is not excluded that the brand will take a percentage of sales in the future.
