One of tennis’ greatest right now is ending his career.
Roger Federer has announced his retirement from the sport.
Then the Swedish tennis legend Jonas Björkman will make an exciting proposal for the Swiss – to follow in Björn Borg’s footsteps.
There were a total of 20 Grand Slam titles during the successful career. But now the 41-year-old has Roger Federer announced his decision to end his tennis career after 24 long years at the top of the world.
Federer quits
The Swiss will go down in history as one of tennis’ absolute greatest of all time and has helped change the sport to what it is today. His very last appearance on the big stage will be the upcoming Laver Cup tournament.
Federer himself helped start the tournament in 2017 and it is the equivalent of golf’s Ryder Cup, where Europe’s best are pitted against the rest of the world. Right from the start until this year, the icons have Björn Borg and John McEnroe have been captains for Team Europe and the Team for the Rest of the World.
“Decent location”
On September 23-25, the prestigious Laver Cup takes place this year. And now comes the Swedish legend Jonas Björkman with a sudden suggestion to Federer, namely what the tennis giant might do after his playing career.
– It is clear that he will be involved and be seen a little around tennis, but I still think that he will withdraw a little at first, says Björkman in an interview with TT before making his proposal.
– But it is Borg’s and McEnroe’s last year as captains in the Laver Cup. Obviously, it could be a decent time for him to step into that role given that he has a stake in the Laver Cup. It wouldn’t be surprising anyway.
Björkman has met Roger Federer several times during his career, but the Swede’s strongest memory of the Swiss is when they stood on the same side of the net. Together they won the doubles title in the Rotterdam ATP tournament in 2001.
– It was very fun to have at least had the opportunity to play with him considering the kind of player he has been and the level he has maintained for so many years, he tells the news agency.
