The Swedish public broadcasting company SVT tells about the secret drone project of the Swedish Armed Forces and Saab.
The Swedish Armed Forces, together with the Ministry of Defense and Saab, have developed drone swarm technology for use by the military. A press conference was held on the subject on Monday.
Sweden has been considered to be lagging behind in the use of drones, says SVT.
With the new technology, a single soldier can control a swarm of up to a hundred drones.
Defense secretary Pål Jonson’s According to
– They can search, locate and identify hostile targets. The drones in the swarm can divide the tasks themselves. They can charge their batteries from time to time, if necessary, and then return to the current task, Jonson describes.
The software can also be supplemented, for example, so that the drones can carry a payload such as a bomb to attack enemy targets.
– The unique thing is not the drone itself, but the fact that we can update and stay up-to-date, said the commander of the Swedish Defense Forces Jonny Lindfors.
According to the commander, lessons have been learned from the war in Ukraine.
The new type of drone swarms are going to be tested in a month or so in the Artic Strike military exercise.
According to the Swedish Ministry of Defense, the project was implemented quickly. Normally, similar development work would have taken five years, now the project only took one year.
According to the Minister of Defense, it is urgent to improve the performance of the army, otherwise “Sweden’s security is threatened.”
