The Swedes prefer to wear that when they are buried

In the face of death, many questions may arise. News24 have previously written about what you must not take with you to the grave when you die, because there are actually quite a few things.

Here are the things you should NOT put in the grave

Another thing people facing death usually think about is what to wear in the coffin before they are buried or cremated.

The Swedes want to wear that in their coffin

Kantar Sweden has carried out a Sifo survey, on behalf of Fonus, and found out the Swedes’ attitude towards death and funerals and to find out what the Swedes would most like to be buried in.

The survey was conducted by 4,512 Swedes aged 18–79 between January 25 and February 6, 2024. The result showed that Swedes prefer to dress in their favorite garment, but there were also quite a few other outfits that were popular in the grave.

– The choice is free – as long as you don’t want to wear something that could be harmful to the oven during a cremation or that could cause an explosion. The most common items of clothing Swedes want to wear in the coffin are their favorite item, something they associate with a nice memory, or a festive item, says Conny Sohlberg, undertaker at Fonus, to News24.

Several want to be buried in pyjamas

Other popular items to wear to the grave are, somewhat oddly perhaps, wedding clothes.

– There are those who choose some more casual options such as pyjamas, wedding clothes or completely naked – something that is more common among men than among women. If there are no preferences, the deceased is dressed in a special sweeping suit that is available in different designs, says Conny Sohlberg, undertaker at Fonus, to News24.
