Second longest throw ever.
Talk about a dream start at the World Cup for Simon Pettersson.
– I screamed straight out, says Daniel Ståhl.
He tends to be the best when it comes to, Simon Pettersson. Before last year’s summer Olympics, not many people knew the Swede, but in the shadow of Daniel Ståhl, he stepped forward with a super throw and won silver. And now he shows super form even during the World Cup.
Tribute by Ståhl
All the preliminary talk has been about Daniel Ståhl and whether he will succeed in keeping up with the press and take another global gold medal. Simon Pettersson did not get it right at all during the season, but stepped forward with a monster throw directly during the qualifiers.
68.11 is Pettersson’s second longest throw in his career – and almost a meter longer than what gave silver in Tokyo last summer. It was also enough to beat Daniel Ståhl, who, however, was extremely happy for his friend.
– I just shouted straight out, says Ståhl to Aftonbladet, and continues:
– It’s absolutely wonderful.
“Usually goes a long way”
Simon Pettersson may not have belonged to one of the medal candidates in advance, but after the successful qualifier he has gained more taste.
– Now I’m eager to go out and fight about it anyway, he says.
However, throws will be required at similar levels, as the competition is fierce in the discus, and smoother than in many, many years.
– In a championship, 68 meters usually go quite far, although I think it will require extra much considering how everyone else throws.
