Fewer permitted tackles in Swedish hockey.
SVT expert Maria Rooth wants to see that.
– They are too dangerous, she says.
Next season, SDHL will allow tackles similar to those on the men’s side. The new rule change will be tested next game year, and evaluated during the season.
Criticism of tackles
A step towards a more equal sport, some think. But others do not like the new rule change in Swedish women’s hockey that will be tested next when the season starts again after the summer.
– We do not want an ugly game but we want the competition and the intensity of the game, says SDHL’s sports director Gizela Ahlgren-Bloom according to SVT.
SVT expert Maria Rooth is also not a big supporter of what will be tried in the SDHL next season – and instead wants to see fewer tackles.
– As it is now, men’s hockey has always been the norm. It has long been wondered why girls are not allowed to do as boys do. I rather think that if you look at men’s hockey, I would like to remove some of the tackles, she says.
“They are too dangerous”
And it is above all a type of tackle that Maria Rooth wants to see disappear from Swedish ice hockey.
– The open ice tackles are far too dangerous, I think. Should hockey go in any direction, I am rather to remove more of the physical contact, she says and continues:
– Ice hockey today is significantly faster than it was a few years ago. So again, gender equality can be interpreted in different ways and I’m a little unsure that it should be similar to men’s hockey, I’m not so sure.
