Sentencing is scheduled to take place in New York local time on Friday, January 10.
The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected the future president of the United States Donald Trump’s the request to postpone the sentencing in the so-called swindling money case.
The Supreme Court rejected Trump’s last-minute request by a vote of 5-4.
The judge hearing the case Juan Merchan and New York appeals courts had previously rejected Trump’s requests for a stay.
Sentencing is now scheduled to take place at the state courthouse in Manhattan, New York on January 10th.
Trump must be present at the sentencing either in person or via remote connection.
Last spring, Trump was found guilty of falsifying accounting before the 2016 presidential election. With this, Trump had covered up the fact that he had paid so-called prank money to adult entertainment actress Stormy Daniels, i.e. to Stephanie Clifford of their alleged relationship. Trump was found guilty on a total of 34 charges.
Judge Merchan stated in his written decision last Friday that Trump will not receive a prison sentence. He said the most viable option is to apply a rarely used form of sentencing that would allow Trump to avoid both life imprisonment and probation. Thus, Trump would also not be sentenced to a fine.
Trump’s sentence will remain in effect, even if he remains without a separate punishment. This is why Trump is likely to become the first person convicted of serious crimes this month to become president of the United States.
