William Poromaa’s success has echoed.
Now he is celebrated in Norway – and highlighted as a major medal candidate.
– He is one of the few who can threaten Norway, says expert Torgeir Björn.
William Poromaa has had a big breakthrough this winter. The Swede had two straight competitions on the podium before he went into hard training for the WC, and after a few years where the Swedish men had a hard time, they now have a real medal hope in Poromaa.
The tribute to the star
William Poromaa has long been a super talent, but now he is ready to take the next step, and seriously threaten championship medals. And it is not only in Sweden that people follow him with strained eyes. Poromaa’s progress has not gone unnoticed in Norway, and ahead of the World Cup the Swede is now being praised.
NRK’s expert commentator Torgeir Björn now believes that the Swede can threaten Norway for the top positions during the WC.
– He is one of the few who can threaten Norway at the distances in the WC. It’s him and Iivo Niskanen. In the skiathlon and five-mile he is a really big medal candidate, he says.

“He was whiny…”
Torgeir Björn believes, however, that there is one thing holding Poromaa back. During the Tour de Ski, Poromaa was in the hot air via fights and washing up, and that’s something he has to stop, says Björn.
– In the Tour de Ski he was whiny and it was an unnecessary use of energy. He is probably wise to focus only on skiing, says the expert.
William Poromaa agrees that he sometimes puts too much focus on things other than skiing – but that he is now ready to make an impression for the right reasons in the WC.
– The goal is to win a medal. I feel like I’ve been there before to watch and learn, when I competed in the WC and Olympics, so I know how it works. I hope to climb on the podium, I will give everything to be there.
