The subway may stop running between Slussen and Gamla stan – for several weeks.
It states Swedish daily newspaper.
The reason is a conflict between SL/Region Stockholm and the city of Stockholm over the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, which is part of the large Slussen project.
SL’s CEO David Lagneholm writes in a letter to the city of Stockholm that if construction begins, they will be forced to stop all subway traffic over the Söderströmsbron, i.e. the bridge between Slussen and Gamla Stan.
The letter states that the city of Stockholm has decided to proceed with the construction, despite the region’s objections.
Security risk
In order to build the pedestrian and bicycle bridge, one would have to drive piles down to the bedrock, partly under the piles of the subway bridge. That would mean a security risk, says SL’s CEO.
“The region is the sole risk bearer for the subway operations and makes the assessment that subway traffic would have to be shut down during ongoing piling work, for safety reasons,” writes David Lagneholm in the letter.
The city of Stockholm believes that the risks with the construction are non-existent, the newspaper states.
How long the subway traffic is at risk of being shut down is still unclear, but David Lagneholm states that the piling is planned to be carried out for 13 weeks.
