In France, the country’s authorities are concerned about the spread of English-language loanwords among video players.
The country’s traditional language authority The Académie Française has instructed government officials to replace English game terms with French equivalents.
According to it, the term e-sports used for e-sports, for example, should in future be replaced by the French equivalent of “jeu video de competition”.
The streamer, in turn, should use the term “joueur-animateur en direct”.
The Académie Française was founded in 1635 to maintain the purity of the French language. Its 40 members have in the past tried to eradicate English-language loanwords from France.
For example, it tried to replace the Wi-Fi word referring to a wireless network with the term “l’access sans fil à internet”, but it did not gain much popularity.
