the strange helmet arrives in stores on February 2

Apple has finally revealed the release date of the Vision Pro, its $3,499 mixed reality headset, and it’s coming soon! However, only the United States will have the right to do so initially. And in these very special conditions.

That’s it, the date has finally fallen! In June 2023, Apple finally unveiled the Vision Pro, its long-awaited mixed reality mask, during the Worldwide Developer Conference. However, in the midst of this concentration of on-board technologies, one unknown remained: the release date. In fact, Apple was content to mention a vague “early 2024”, without further details. It seems that the company does not intend to organize a new Keynote to further present the possibilities and capabilities of the product, since it has just revealed in A press release its release date, and it’s close! Indeed, the mixed reality headset will be officially marketed on February 2, 2024 in the United States, the only country to be able to benefit from it initially. Pre-orders will begin on January 19.

Vision Pro: a $3,499 device

As a reminder, the Vision Pro, with its integrated M2 processor, will offer a 4K screen for each eye and will allow you to switch from augmented reality (AR) to virtual reality (VR) using a wheel located on the side of the headset – we are therefore talking about mixed reality. Users will be able to access a store with hundreds of thousands of applications directly from the App Store, in addition to apps optimized for visionOS, the device’s operating system. Apple primarily pitched the mask as a way to interact with familiar apps, such as FaceTime, Photos, and Movies, as well as view spatial videos recorded with the iPhone 15 Pro. Remember that you will still have to pay $3,499 to obtain this little gem in its version with 256 GB of storage – to which you will have to add at least $99 to integrate corrective lenses, for users wearing glasses. It will be possible to order the Vision Pro on the online store or in physical Apple Stores, but only in the United States for the moment, the rest of the world still having to wait for an unspecified period. But there is no question of having it delivered: you will have to make an appointment in the store for a personalized installation, because the helmet must be adapted to each person, whether for vision or skull dimensions. The manufacturer will also provide a support band to place above the head, a light cover, two pads for the cover, a screen protector, a cloth, the external battery (2 hours of autonomy), a cable USB-C and a power adapter.

Despite rumors predicting a delay, Apple has kept its promises in terms of release schedule. The fact remains that the Vision Pro promises to be a great innovation on a technological level, many still wonder about its use and its abuses. The Apple company still presents it as a “spatial computer” rather than as a simple virtual reality and augmented reality headset. But one wonders what the Vision Pro will do more or better than a PC or a Mac, except for gestures. Above all, some are concerned about the fact that this inherently “immersive” accessory risks cutting its users off from their real environment, placing them in a perfectly artificial digital bubble. Wait and see…
