The stock exchange in Copenhagen is not extinguished – facade may topple

The historic Copenhagen building Børsen is still burning.
During the night, around 50 firefighters struggled to put out smoldering fires in the old building.
But the work is slow.
– It is difficult for us to get to. The night’s work has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped, says rescue service spokesperson Frank Trier Mikkelsen to DR.

The hope was that the fire would be out during Wednesday morning. But the rescue service will be on site for at least another 24 hours, Danish media now reports.

At least half of the building has so far burned down. All that remains of the worst-hit parts is the exterior mortar, which firefighters are struggling to save.

In parallel with the extinguishing work, efforts are underway to ensure that the building’s facade does not collapse and spill out onto the street.

Unclear cause of fire

Large roadblocks around Børsen will continue to affect traffic in the area during Wednesday, Danish TV2 reports.

The fire in the historically important 17th-century building started on Tuesday morning in a part where renovation work was underway. Horrified Copenhageners gathered to watch as the signature scepter representing entwined dragon tails plummeted to the ground.

The cause of the fire is still unclear.
