The Steam Deck will benefit from a clever synchronization function

The Steam Deck is approaching… and Valve has just announced a new function for its portable game console: dynamic synchronization with the cloud. The goal is to be able to easily switch from console to PC during a game.

When the function is active, a save of the game in progress is automatically transferred to the cloud before the console is put on standby, during the game. It is therefore possible to resume the game on a computer or even on another copy of the Steam Deck. Similarly, game changes are automatically downloaded to the console when it is woken up.

Valve tells developers that the Dynamic Cloud Sync feature is available for free, but they need to manually enable it in their games and use the new APIs. The feature is part of the Steam Cloud, already used by most games to save games in the cloud. The modifications to be made are therefore a priori minimal for the developers.

The dynamic cloud sync feature is not required, but a player will then need to close the game on their console to resume play on another device, or start a new game on it.
