Minister Gewessler, in a statement to the press, stated that the regulation, which has been worked on for about a year, for the vehicles of speeding people, passed the parliament with the support of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SPÖ).
WILL BE SOLD LATER
Gewessler stated that starting from March 2024, the vehicles of people who speed will be confiscated, these vehicles will then be sold by auction and the proceeds will be used for public benefit.
Stating that the vehicles of people who exceed the speed limit of 60 kilometers per hour in the city or exceed the speed limit of 70 kilometers outside the city will be temporarily confiscated for two weeks, Gewessler said that an investigation will be carried out on these people, it will be determined whether the people in question have driven at a similar speed before. He said that it will be decided whether the vehicle will be taken from the person or not.
LIMIT 80
Gewessler stated that such a process will not work for those who drive at much higher speeds, and those who exceed the speed limit set in the city at 80 kilometers per hour and 90 kilometers outside the city will immediately be seized.
Stating that the regulation does not target people who make mistakes or drive fast to a certain extent, Gewessler emphasized that it is aimed at drivers who speed irresponsibly, causing serious risks and endangering the lives of third parties.
While the New Austria Party (NEOS), which has a seat in the parliament, did not support the regulation because it found it legally problematic, the far-right Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), which opposed the regulation, argued that the speed limit should be increased on highways. (AA)
