In the United Kingdom, the two finalists in the race to become Prime Minister begin their campaign this Thursday, July 28. Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak begin a series of meetings across the country, until the end of August, to convince the conservative militants: they are the ones who will decide between them. In Boris Johnson’s very conservative constituency of Uxbridge-Hillingdon, British citizens are hesitating.
From our correspondent in London, Emeline Wine
Lucy follows all the debates between the candidates. A non-insert conservative, she will not be able to vote but has a preference: “ In between, Liz Truss. She’s trying to cut taxes and the polls give her the lead… So let’s give her a chance. »
It is above all on taxation that Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak stand out in terms of politics, and this is precisely what earns the ex-chancellor points, for Ali, 21 years old and rather on the left: “ Rishi Sunak would be the least bad of the two, his proposals will have in my opinion the least negative impact, compared to Liz Truss. Especially on tax cuts, I’m not a big fan of that and I believe big business should be taxed more. »
But for Ron, a former Tory disgusted with politics, the choice is made above all on the personality of the candidates. Like Rishi Sunak’s marriage to a millionaire heiress: I don’t like Rishi Sunak and the fact that his family is so rich. I think there is a conflict of interest, that he will protect the wealthy. Big conflict of interest. »
Several other voters sigh at the thought of the remaining five weeks of campaigning, and consider that neither Liz Truss nor Rishi Sunak will be able to repair the trust.
