Series history has already produced some iconic duos. However, quite high up on the popularity scale FBI agent: inside Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from file X – the scary cases of the FBI. In a total of 11 seasons and two films, the investigators went to the bottom of numerous paranormal cases-and thus conquered the hearts of millions of series fans around the world.
This success is undoubtedly also based on the coherent chemistry between the main actors: inside David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in front of the camera, which in the series made the perfect duo. And one may think that such chemistry was only possible thanks to a functioning interpersonal relationship between the two stars. But the truth is somewhere behind the scenes …
Files X stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson did not get along well on the set of the series
In fact, the ratio of Duchovny and Anderson was quite tense if they did not have to act by side in their respective rollers. Sometimes there was even so thick air between the two stars that they were off the camera for a longer period of time did not speak to each other.
Many saw direct evidence of the disharmony at the time at that time in the Golden Globe Awards in 1997, in which both were awarded a prize. While Anderson in her acceptance speech your co-star not even mentioned at allshe then visibly rolled with her eyes when Duchovny put his appreciation for her in his thank you.
In the Podcast Table Manners, Anderson recently spoke about the complicated relationship with Duchovny during the X-time file and drew an interesting comparison:
We have always had a pretty complex relationship. If you work with someone for so long and intensely, you are practically married together.
Common acts of X-past lets Star’s dispute enclosed
However, the “marriage” of the two ended: in the meantime the files X-Stars have presented themselves together several times and spoken of their friendship. Like in Duchovny’s own podcast Fail Better, in which Anderson was a guest in November 2024.
In the conversation, the two talked quite openly about their past problems and why their interaction in the series worked so well despite the conflicts. Duchovny recapitulated in this way:
During working on the series there was a long time in which we didn’t even have to do with each other outside the camera. And there were a lot of tensions. But that apparently didn’t matter for the work, because we are both crazy, I guess. We could just go out there and do what we had to do.
Anderson also expressed their surprise on the functioning dynamics of the duo in front of the camera:
It is crazy that we were able to show the various feelings and emotions and the attraction and all these things in front of the camera, but then not to talk to each other for weeks.
Despite all the disputes, the time with file X was still something that would both connect both forever, Duchovny continued in his podcast:
It’s almost like being part of the same family. […] There is a certain common experience, a common knowledge and a common past that never disappears.
It is nice to see that the two TV favorites do well today. And who knows: Maybe Duchovny and Anderson even want to return as a Mulder and Scully with their new friendship at some point.
