Finland ended the EC qualifiers with a clear victory over San Marino. Finland’s further qualifying matches are still open, but will be decided in the draw held on Thursday.
The Finnish men’s national football team beat San Marino 2–1 in their last European Championship qualifying match on Monday evening. Finland’s surprising hero had scored both goals Try Soiri.
Finland did not make it to the top two in its group, so there was no direct competition spot for next year’s European Championships in Germany.
The matter was clear before the last qualifying games against San Marino and Northern Ireland. However, Finland has a chance to reach the European Championship place in the European Championship qualifying games to be played in March.
The matches between the Czech Republic and Moldova and Italy and Ukraine were particularly tense on Monday evening. If the Czech Republic or Italy had lost their matches, Huuhkajat would have avoided the tougher A path in the further qualifiers.
However, the Czech Republic defeated Moldova 2–0. The game between Italy and Ukraine ended in a goalless draw. Extra time saw a tense situation when Italy’s Bryan Crisrtante appeared to bring down Ukraine’s Mykhailo Mudryk in the penalty area. However, there was no whistle.
Finland may now, in principle, find themselves on the harder A path in the draw held on Thursday. So many of the A-level teams of the Nations League ended up directly in the European Championship, that the A-path has to be completed by drawing one of the teams from the B-path to the upper path. In addition to Finland, the draw includes Ukraine and Iceland.
If Finland ends up on the A path, it will likely face Wales first on the away field. The competition place would probably be decided in the match against Poland. Poland will likely face Estonia in the second A-path semi-final match.
However, the A-path can be renewed if Croatia unexpectedly loses at home to Armenia in Tuesday’s final round and Wales wins at home against Turkey. In that case, Croatia would fall to the next round. Then Finland would face Poland in the first qualifying game on the A path. If Poland were to fall, the deciding game would then be against Croatia.
Now the Huuhkajas certainly hope, first of all, that the lottery doesn’t fall to Finland on Thursday. If Finland does not end up on the A path, it will first face Bosnia-Herzegovina on the B path. If Finland wins the match, the competition place would be decided either against Ukraine, Iceland or Israel.
Therefore, two wins in the further qualification are required for a place in the European Championships. The game dates for the further qualification are March 21 and 26. In any case, Finland will play the first qualifying match away from home. The home advantage will be drawn for the second qualifying match that decides the race place.
