The Spanish Climbing Cup passes through the heart of Madrid

The Spanish Cup of Speed ​​and Block Climbing swap the climbing walls and mountains for one of the busiest spots in Madrid next weekend of June 4 and 5.

The renovated Plaza de España will host a 45-meter-wide climbing wall to be the first of the three tests that will comprise the championship. This great wall will be divided into two: a main one 16 meters high for the speed test, while on its sides there will be two walls of 15 meters each wide and 4.5 meters high for the block test.

The event was attended by the Councilor for Sports of the Madrid City Council, Sophia Mirandathe councilor of the Moncloa-Aravaca district, Deaf Loretoand the president of the Spanish Federation of Mountain and Climbing Sports, Alberto Ayora. The competition will have three tests. The first, the one held in Madrid on June 4 and 5. Two weeks later, On June 18 and 19, the Plaza de la Catedral in Oviedo will host the second test. And the last one will be September 10 and 11 in Cáceres.

Change of formate

In Tokyo 2020, climbing had a single test with three disciplines: the difficulty, the speed and the boulder -block in Spanish-. Nevertheless, ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, difficulty and bouldering will come together in a combined event and speed will separate. That is to say, it will go from one test with medals to two, and it will compete in parallel.

Despite the change in disciplines, Alberto Ginés is already in full preparation to try to revalidate his Olympic gold. The man from Cáceres comes from being in sixteenth place (his best result for him) in the test corresponding to the World Cup in Seoul. “I ended up very happy and it was much better than we expected. It was a shot of motivation to continue facing the World Cup”he pointed.
