Anthony Joshua dropped the bomb this Saturday after an event he attended. In a statement to ‘Behind The Gloves’, AJ confirmed that the Spaniard Ángel Fernández is his new head coach. The 32-year-old Englishman decided to break up with the coach with whom he had spent his entire professional career, rob mcracken, after falling against Olek Usyk. For the past few months, the former world heavyweight champion He was visiting different gyms in the United States to choose a new handler, but he ended up sticking with someone he already had on his team.
Ángel Fernández joined Joshua’s team as an assistant coach after the Englishman’s loss to Andy Ruiz. The Spaniard was a fundamental part of the change in style that AJ showed in the rematch against the American. Fernández, who has lived in England for more than five years, has just over five years of experience as a coach. With a marked ‘Cuban’ style (the Galician had Jorge Rubio as one of his teachers in Miami), he caught the attention of English boxing and also of Joshua, who after a single session he signed him for his team in 2019. During the last year, Fernández’s growth has been exponential. He has top British prospects on his roster and currently has a great deal with the loughborough universitywhere he has his training center.
The first fight in which Ángel Fernández will be Joshua’s main trainer will be, in principle, the rematch against Olek Usyk. That lawsuit was scheduled for May or June, but Usyk’s presence in the Ukraine war makes it highly unlikely that the deadlines will be met. In fact, in recent days, England has already begun to talk about the possibility that AJ would dispute an interim belt while waiting for the situation to be unblocked. Usyk acknowledged this week that he is currently “defending his country” and that at the moment “he does not consider when his next fight will be.”
