The Spakenburg fabric combination from traditional costume to childrens clothing

Maria’s sister, Jannie Heinen, is also there when we visit. She is one of the more than 50 women in Spakenburg who still wear traditional costumes every day. Although that was not self-evident: “In the 60s a friend said, should we wear civilian clothes together, that’s what we called it. I wore it for 18 years, but I never felt comfortable in civilian clothes, with bare legs. When I think about it, it’s horrible. And then we went to bake oliebollen for the church and we had to wear traditional costumes. I loved it and so I kept wearing them.”
