The three governing parties and the Sweden Democrats are driving Sweden in an authoritarian direction. That’s what Magdalena Andersson (S), party leader and former prime minister, writes on Dagens Nyheter’s debate page.

It is clear that the Moderates, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals have not managed to “rein in” SD, according to Andersson.

“Instead of a traditional government, we have a right-wing regime led by Sweden Democrats.”

Magdalena Andersson mentions verbal attacks on journalists, ideas about a major clean-up of authorities, the decision to shorten the mandate of university boards and the criticism of party lotteries as examples.

“The development we see in Sweden is in line with how authoritarian right-wing regimes act around the world. Where opposition, media and academia are silenced, all with the aim of strengthening their own power.”

She believes that the Tidö parties “want to dismantle what holds us together”.

“It is something fundamental that is at stake in the coming years. The soul of our country. Who we are here at home, and in the eyes of the outside world. The Sweden that we love and are proud of.”
