Södertälje finished in second place in the regular season and thus faced Karlskoga, who needed to defeat Kalmar to secure their place in the quarter-finals, in the fight for a semi-final place.
But early in the match series it was clear that there would be no roses for the 08 team, which before Sunday’s meeting in the Nobel Hall was at the bottom of the match series with 0-3 after three consecutive overtime losses. Thus, Magnus Bogren’s team was whipped to win to keep the season alive.
But the visitors had the worst possible start to the match. This when, after three minutes of play, Viktor Lennartsson fired a quick shot that meant a lead goal for Karlskoga.
In the second period, the home team was then able to top up with both a 2- and a 3-0 goal before the Södertälje players woke up.
Shortly after Karlskoga’s 3-0 goal, Christopher Liljewall was able to reduce to 1-3, which was also the score before the third period.
But instead of creating any real nerves in the match, Karlskoga was instead able to decide the match in practice when Otto Stenberg was able to score the 4–1 goal after five minutes of play.
Södertälje was certainly able to reduce with barely five minutes left in the match, but it was too little and too late for Södertälje, who in the end had to see themselves defeated by 2–4. The result means that SSK is eliminated after losing the match series 0–4.
– What do I say? It’s not so easy to say anything right now, this is one of the hardest losses I’ve had since I started as a coach. I had hope and faith that we would be involved in arguing a lot more, now we haven’t been. It’s just empty, says SSK coach Magnus Bogren to TV4.
