Swedish parties do not usually advocate loans to finance public expenditure. The Social Democrats and the Center Party now want Sweden to rethink.
– Europe must strengthen its ability to deter and must increase its support to Ukraine. Then we have to switch up the production of weapons and ammunition, says party leader Magdalena Andersson.
Andersson believes that the EU must be able to defend the Union and that many countries cannot equip without loans, as their finances are too weak. You also want to review the growth and stability pact, which limits the public expenditure of the member states.
“When the United States is swaying, Europe must come together”
The Center Party believes that the security situation in the world has led the party to think about the need for joint loans.
“We must be involved in strengthening the entire EU and Ukraine’s defense when the United States is so clearly taking the cap against Europe,” says party leader Muharrem Demirok.
He continues:
– This is about our common freedom in Europe and when the US sway, we must come together in Europe and loans are an important part of it.
On Thursday, the Environment Party also considered the issue and announces the evening that they have also changed their attitude.
“The Environmental Party is open that joint EU loans may be required to support Ukraine and build up Europe’s defense capacity.” Writes the party’s press secretary Matilda Häger to SVT.
M: We risk paying more
The proposal for joint loans for European defense spending has been up for discussion among EU finance ministers. IN Current On Tuesday, Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) expressed her concern that Sweden, with her good economy, could pay dearly for other countries. She is stuck with that.
– Different countries have different inputs. We and the Netherlands are very skeptical about borrowing jointly, because it often affects countries like Sweden more than others.
Svantesson does not rule out that you may change but lift other options.
-Use the frozen Russian assets, use the framework we have and re-prioritize in the EU budget, emphasizes the finance minister.
The Center Party believes that it is worth it despite risks.
– There are always risks, but if you put it in relation to what peace and freedom are worth, then we are prepared to handle that risk, says Demirok.
