The chaos caused by the blizzard in Germany at the Munich airport continues. Flights are still canceled and delayed. The airport’s website advises you to contact the airline directly if you are flying on the original schedule today or tomorrow.

Over the weekend, caught up with two Finnish students who were stuck in Munich due to the noise.

They say they are still in town.

– We were waiting for our flight in the evening at the airport, when the passengers of the Sofian flight leaving from the same gate before us were informed ten minutes before getting on the plane that their plane was so frozen that Lufthansa was looking for a new plane for them, reached at the airport on Monday Silja tells.

Eventually, their flight was canceled as well.

– We looked at the planes on the field, and there was such a layer of snow on top of them that we wondered why they were trying to take off with those.

According to Silja, the chaotic situation on the field still continues, and no one seems to know what will happen next.

Hundreds of flights were supposed to leave on Monday

Euronews according to 840 flights were supposed to leave Munich on Monday, but at least 230 of them have been cancelled. The airport authorities have published a notice, according to which passengers should stay away from the airport, unless they have personally received confirmation of the departure of the flight. The duration of the situation has not been announced.

According to Euronews, train connections from and to Munich are still badly messed up.

One back-up plan for Silja’s fellow travelers was to somehow travel to Frankfurt and fly from there, but the travelers’ trust in the German arrangements was already so shaken that they ended up with a radical solution instead of just waiting.

Silja says that the group finally decided to rent a car and go to Italy. The changed travel arrangements will be expensive for many, as the car rental alone costs about 1,100 euros, according to Silja. At the time of the interview, the group was just driving away from Munich.

Some of Silja’s traveling companions remained at the airport to wait if the new flight would be possible even later.

– Here the weather is sunny and snowy and the visibility seems to be good. The sky is clear, but there is just a lot of snow here.

– These are decent snowballs, which we also have in Finland. And yes, it sometimes surprises the Finns, and it seems to surprise the Germans as well, Silja laughs.
