The snooping camera which puts you wheel surfers

The reason it’s so hard to catch wheel surfers in the act is that they often keep their phone under the car’s window line.

That is why England is now investing in new AI cameras, which are mounted high up and should be able to identify both those who use their mobile phones while driving and those who do not wear a seat belt.

This is announced by the British National Highways in a press release.

Two dangerous phenomena

Making this investment is due to the fact that both steering wheel surfing and not using the seat belt entail great risks.

If you use your phone while driving, you are four times more likely to have an accident, while those who do not wear a seat belt are twice as likely to die in a crash.

– We know that distracted driving and failure to wear seat belts were key factors in a large number of incidents that resulted in people being killed or seriously injured, says the National Highways Department Head Matt Staton.

Films all passing cars

The cameras, which are mounted on vehicles or trailers, work by filming every driver that passes.

An AI system sorts out the cases where it detects a crime. These videos are forwarded to the police, who decide whether any action should be taken. Remaining movies are deleted.

Failure to wear a seatbelt can result in a fine of up to £500, while the fine for speeding can be up to £1,000.

England’s wheel surfers live dangerously

AI cameras of this type have already been tested on a smaller scale in England since 2021, but the initiative is now being extended to 10 police forces across the country.

Going forward, there are plans for such cameras to also be attached to portals so that they have a clear view of all lanes.

The cameras are not unique to England, but are also used in Australia, among other places. Who knows, maybe they will soon also come to Sweden?
