The police in the United States release a film showing the shooting drama after the attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day. The perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was behind the wheel and opened fire on the officers who surrounded him.
– They killed the terrorist, says Anne Kirkpatrick, head of the police.
On New Year’s Day, the United States was shocked by what the FBI considers an act of terrorism. 14 people were killed when the perpetrator drove his car into the crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
The FBI says the perpetrator in New Orleans acted on his own.
– We assess that there was no one else involved in this attack than Shamsud-Din Jabbar, says Christopher Raia from the FBI.
Police release film
On Friday, the police in the United States released a video showing when the perpetrator is confronted by the officers. Behind a deployed airbag, the perpetrator starts shooting at the officers who surround him, the police say.
The images from the body camera show how officers flee the scene, and several fall to the ground. Three officers remained standing and fired at Jabbar, according to the reports.
– They killed the terrorist. He was pronounced dead at the scene, New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said when the footage was released.
In the perpetrator’s car, the police found an IS flag, weapons and suspected explosive devices.
Believed to have been inspired by IS
According to the FBI, Jabbar rented the car in the city of Houston, Texas, the day before the crime. On New Year’s Eve, he drove from Houston to New Orleans.
– Then he posted several videos on an internet platform where he shows his support for IS, says Christopher Raia from the FBI.
In total, it is supposed to be five films, the last one is said to have been shared shortly before the crime. There, Jabbar also states that he must have joined IS before the summer of 2025.
Shortly after the crime, the FBI announced that bomb technicians were working in the area when several suspiciously dangerous items were found. Two of these proved to be sharp, but had not detonated.
– We have found surveillance material that shows where Jabbar places these, says Raia.
The fact that the police are now releasing the footage from the body camera is part of the authority’s policy, to show residents how the police acted during the incident.
